Japanese Snowball (Viburnum plicatum)
Form:
Several cultivars are known; 'Summer Snowflake' is a compact, dense, upright, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub which typically matures 3-5' tall with a similar spread.
Leaves:
Ovate, dark green leaves (to 5" long). Reddish to bronze-purple fall color.
Flowers:
Non-fragrant, creamy white flowers in small, flat-topped umbels (to 2-4" diameter) appear in a profuse spring bloom, with sporadic continued bloom occurring throughout the summer. Flower clusters have small, non-showy fertile inner flowers surrounded by a ring of showy sterile flowers. Leaves and flower clusters arranged in two rows, or files.
Fruits & Seeds:
Fertile flowers mature in late summer to orange-red, berry-like fruit, later maturing to black.
Tier 3 - Presence is of Interest
The species that occur in this tier are likely ornamental escapes. It is not known whether they are established and/or spreading within Cleveland Metroparks. The ecological impact is poorly known for these species.
Action: The presence of these plants should be recorded by approximating the number of plants. Initial population numbers are likely small.
